ABOUT THIS VIRTUAL WORKSHOP

The use of thinking routines and the idea of making students’ learning and thinking visible originated at Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and has captured the interest of schools and teachers worldwide, especially as educators navigate the disruption of AI. With such popularity, we sometimes get superficial use of the routines. For example, teachers may use thinking routines as simple activities. The real power of thinking routines comes from using them to establish patterns of thinking in the classroom, but how do teachers move beyond the use of routines as good activities to their establishment as patterns of thinking? What do classrooms look like when such patterns take hold? How do thinking routines engage students in active learning?

Drawing on the book The Power of Making Thinking Visible, this interactive workshop with author and educational leader Ron Ritchhart will provide participants with the chance to learn how teachers at all levels can make students’ thinking visible through 4 key strategies: thinking routines, documentation, questioning, and listening. The effective use of these practices can transform classrooms into cultures of thinking. For those already using thinking routines, the coordination of these practices in tandem will elevate their practice.

Participants will:

  • Understand the transformative potential of making thinking visible
  • Explore specific practices for making thinking visible and how these practices support one another to advance students’ learning
  • Examine the key thinking moves necessary for students to build understanding and how we can make these central in our teaching

AUDIENCE

This workshop is ideal for K-12 classroom teachers, curriculum designers and instructional coaches, school leaders and administrators.
