ABOUT THIS VIRTUAL SERIES

This two-part continuation of the AI and the Teaching of Writing workshop offers educators the time, space, and support to redesign a key writing assessment in response to generative AI. In Part I, we’ll deconstruct a signature assessment into its essential process components. Then, using strategies for effective prompting, we’ll use chatbots to test the “vulnerability” of each of those components, acting as students who might use AI to bypass essential learning. We will share and discuss the results of our vulnerability tests and consider next steps. In Part II, participants will redesign the assessment to include “AI-resistant” and “AI-assisted” strategies that require student engagement and critical thinking in meeting assessment criteria. Participants will share and discuss their redesigns.

Participants will:

  • Clarify the purpose and key outcomes of a signature writing assessment.
  • Deconstruct that assessment in order to understand its “AI vulnerability.”
  • Use “AI-assisted” and “AI-resistant” strategies to redesign the assessment to encourage student engagement and critical thinking.

AUDIENCE

This workshop is ideal for teams of 2-4 middle school or high school educators who teach the same course. Participants should come to the workshop with a signature writing assessment from their course that they would like to test and redesign in response to generative AI.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Eric Hudson, CATDC Facilitator

Eric Hudson is a facilitator and strategic advisor who supports schools in making sense of what’s changing in education and in being responsive to the people they serve. He has spent his career in education, and he uses his design sense to put the learner at the heart of every experience. Most recently, Eric spent a decade at Global Online Academy (GOA), first as an instructional coach and ultimately as Chief Program Officer, working with schools around the world to rethink where, when, and how we learn. Prior to GOA, he was a teacher at the middle, high school, and college levels. The classroom is where he developed his passion for learner-centered design and facilitation. He currently serves on the board of the Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools (ATLIS). Eric has a M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. from Cornell University.
