Universal Design for Learning: Beyond the Basics

SESSION 1: June 12, 2024 | 9:00am - 3:00pm | San Francisco Day School

SESSION 2: June 13, 2024 | 9:00am - 3:00pm | San Francisco Day School

ABOUT THIS IN-PERSON SUMMER INSTITUTE

This dynamic, two-day Institute provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn more about Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Neuroscientific research and our own lived experiences highlight the fact that we are all variable learners. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the foundational core concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), apply these concepts at their own sites, and set their own personal goals for deeper learning.

Over the course of the two days, we will explore practical applications of UDL to lesson design and how to leverage the UDL guidelines to design for access and learner agency. Participants will also have the choice to work independently or in small teams to apply their understanding of UDL and the UDL design process in order to identify and reduce barriers that limit learning. Join us to discover more about how we can use this powerful lens to design flexible, inclusive, and equitable learning experiences for all.

Using the UDL framework and its practical guidelines, participants will:

  • Understand and apply the foundational concepts of UDL
  • Explore the UDL Guidelines
  • Design using the UDL design process
  • Identify UDL in practice
  • Build a UDL toolkit of UDL-aligned strategies
  • Apply UDL to their practice

AUDIENCE

This program is open to those who have previously enrolled in “Meeting the Needs of All Learners: An Introduction to UDL” as well as any K-12 educator (general, special education, curriculum coordinators, administrators, instructional technology specialists, paraprofessionals, professional learning facilitators, etc.) new to UDL. Previous training in UDL is not a prerequisite.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Sylvia Rodriguez Douglass, CATDC Facilitator

Dr. Sylvia Rodriguez Douglass is an Implementation Specialist in Northern California. Prior to joining CAST, she was the Universal Design for Learning Instructional Coach at San Francisco Day School. There, she had the privilege to expand UDL practices school-wide in partnership with CAST. Her background is in special education, and she has been a learning specialist/special educator in private and public schools in San Francisco and New York City. She is also a proud member of the Stakeholder Council for UDL Rising to Equity and is excited to contribute to the timely and necessary process of revisiting the guidelines through an anti-racist and equity lens.

HOST AND PARTNER SCHOOL

CATDC partners with member schools to host our in-person programs, providing educators the opportunity to learn with peers in diverse settings. We are thrilled to partner with San Francisco Day School on this Summer Institute, welcoming the larger independent school community on their campus for two days of learning and collaboration.
