ABOUT THIS ONLINE WORKSHOP

Join arts educator Flavia Zuñiga-West to learn how to co-create community in the classroom and understand students’ cultures and identities through a deep dive into the practice and theory of Culturally Responsive Teaching Strategies in the Arts, with a focus on anti-bias and anti-racist education. Expect to leave with daily practices that can be used in the classroom around supporting students through the arts and for personal growth.  Be sure to have your sketchbook or journal to reflect and process ideas through drawing and writing.

LEARNING GOALS

Participants will:

  • Explore the practice and theory of Culturally Responsive Teaching Strategies in the Arts and how to apply it to any subject matter
  • Learn strategies to build trusting relationships by co-creating community & community norms with students
  • Activate, engage, and incorporate creativity into reflective practice

AUDIENCE

Art, design, and makerspace teachers, DEI practitioners, and all classroom and specialist teachers interested in using the arts to build community with their students.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Flavia Zuñiga-West is a Los Angeles based art educator, and artist. She graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting and earned a Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in the Museum Studies Program at New York University. She currently works in the Visual Arts Department at Harvard-Westlake Middle School. Flavia is an arts educator, curator, professional development facilitator and founder of the nationally renowned Adding Voices Conference and Symposiums. Flavia specializes in culturally responsive curriculum development that utilizes critical multiculturalism pedagogy, Black and Chicana feminist theory, and anti-racist frameworks in order to reframe the art historical canon by centering contemporary BIPOC artists in her work and the work she does with students. Additionally, Flavia offers professional development opportunities for art teachers, museum educators, community arts instructors, and teaching artists through regional and district workshops, webinars, and keynote engagements.
