Since 2010, CATDC has hosted its annual Women + Leadership Conference to inspire independent school women to grow and develop as leaders in their personal and professional lives. Women + Leadership is an affinity space that is welcoming and respectful of all women of all backgrounds, including trans women and those who are nonbinary, and gender non-conforming.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Join the California Teacher Development Collaborative at the 12th annual Southern California Women + Leadership Conference! This powerful event brings together women educators from schools throughout the region to celebrate our journeys and strengthen our individual and collective impact.

We are delighted to announce our theme for Women + Leadership this year, Radical Care: Healing Ourselves and Our Schools. Regional committees made up of women leaders from our member schools are meeting this month and next to build out the specifics of our agendas centered on a dynamic conversation with Dr. Dena Simmons, and including activities focused on individual and collective healing, personal and professional growth, as well as plenty of opportunities to connect with other independent school educators.

Featured Presenters and Activities:

  • Keynote: Dr. Dena Simmons, founder of LiberatED, an organization that centers radical love, healing, and justice in education so that all children could live, learn, and thrive in the comfort of their own skin.
  • Experiential activities to facilitate connections, develop new skills, and inspire us to take action
  • Time for  reflection and restoration
  • A hosted-happy hour from 3:00 - 4:00pm for continued discussion and networking

 

INTENDED AUDIENCE

At CATDC, we acknowledge that the feminist movement has a history of exclusion and marginalization.  We want to break out of that pattern by adopting a definition of women that is gender-inclusive and gender-expansive, and one that challenges white supremacy. Women + Leadership is an affinity space that is welcoming and respectful of all women of all backgrounds, including trans women and those who are nonbinary, gender non-conforming, and any others who identify as a woman in a way that is significant to them.

DR. DENA SIMMONS

Dr. Dena Simmons is a lifelong learner, truth-teller, and abolitionist from the Bronx, New York. She is the founder of LiberatED, an organization that centers radical love, healing, and justice in education so that all children could live, learn, and thrive in the comfort of their own skin. She is also a visiting professor at the Institute for Racial Justice at Loyola University of Chicago and a Spring Point Partner Learner-in-Residence. She is the former Assistant Director of Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, where she supported schools to use the power of emotions to create a more compassionate and just society.

Prior to her work at the Center, Dena served as a middle school educator, teacher educator, diversity facilitator, and curriculum developer. She has been a leading voice on teacher education and has written and spoken across the country about social and racial justice pedagogy, diversity, emotional intelligence, and bullying in K-12 school settings, including the White House, the inaugural Obama Foundation Summit, the United Nations, two TEDx talks, a TED talk on Broadway, and Oprah’s OWN series, Speak Sis. Dr. Simmons has been profiled in Education Week, Edutopia, Learning for Justice, the Huffington Post, NPR, the AOL/PBS project, MAKERS: Women Who Make America, and a Beacon Press Book, Do It Anyway: The New Generation of Activists.

Dr. Simmons’ research interests include teacher preparedness to address bullying in the K-12 school setting, culturally responsive pedagogy, and the intersection of equity and social and emotional learning (SEL) interventions in an effort to ensure and foster justice and liberating spaces for all.
