ABOUT THIS RETREAT
Led by experienced senior leaders in diverse roles, CATDC’s retreat for women in senior leadership positions will build community for women-identified leaders as they navigate the opportunities and challenges of varied positions. Facilitators will design a retreat that addresses the inherent complexity of senior leadership work and offers participants opportunities to share experiences, discuss their school’s dynamics, and provide one another with support. Additionally, the group will explore leveraging and expanding skill sets on their professional paths. The in-person retreat will take place at the Santa Barbara Inn.
Participants will:
- Build community and connection, and gain perspective from women-identified leaders in independent schools across the state of California
- Reflect on and share leadership successes and challenges
- Evolve skill sets to support their continued professional growth
- Support fellow participants on their professional journey
Registration includes program time, meals, and accommodations at the Santa Barbara Inn. Travel to the retreat is not included.
ABOUT THE FACILITATORS
Carla Cretaro is the Lower School Head at The John Thomas Dye School. She has enjoyed being in the field of education for the past twenty years, most recently joining The John Thomas Dye School (JTD) as Lower School Head. Prior to JTD, Carla was the principal for seven years at Community Magnet Charter School, an affiliated charter in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Additionally, she has taught every grade at the elementary level and has served as coordinator in charge of school programming, enrollment, and student achievement. She holds a bachelor’s degree in African-American Studies from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from California State University, Northridge. Carla also holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and an Administrative Services Credential. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends, and having fun with her two sons, Maxwell and Cameron.
Elizabeth Imende is currently the Executive Director of the Association of International Schools in Africa. Before that, she was the Assistant Head of School at Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, CA for four years and prior to that she served for nearly a decade as a staff developer with Research for Better Teaching in Massachusetts. In her various roles, Elizabeth has designed school-based professional development for Pre K-12 faculty; provided instructional coaching; developed a digital platform for school-wide curriculum; led the implementation of the strategic plan; and designed and facilitated customized adult-learning programs for the faculty of more than 60 schools across the country, including Brentwood School, Harvard-Westlake School and the Archer School for Girls, locally. In addition to her work in public and independent schools in the U.S., Elizabeth has consulted for schools in South America, East Asia, Europe, and Africa on topics such as school governance, diversity, equity and inclusion, strategic planning, backward design, curriculum planning, and observing and evaluating teaching. Elizabeth began her 25-year career in education in the classroom, teaching literature to high-schoolers in Boston, then English at an international school in Germany, and later freshman courses at Northeastern University. Elizabeth holds a Master's in Education, dual-focused on Teaching and Learning and Adult Development, from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education and a bachelor's degree in English from Wake Forest University. Elizabeth is a Pasadena native, avid arts enthusiast and long-time advocate of women in leadership.
Laura D. Ross is the Head of School at Harvard-Westlake. Prior to beginning this position, she was the Associate Head of School for three years. Additionally, she spent eight years as an upper school head, three at Harvard-Westlake and five at Greenhill School in Dallas, Texas. Prior to moving into a division head role she spent seventeen years in a variety of roles in education: a college counselor, a college admissions officer, a soccer coach, a teacher of meditation, social ethics, and world religions, and a dorm parent in a boarding school. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Wesleyan University and a Master’s degree from Stanford University in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs. Her husband Gregg teaches math at the middle school at Harvard-Westlake, and her daughter Casey is Harvard-Westlake class of ’23, and her son Graham is Harvard-Westlake class of ’26.
