ABOUT THIS ONLINE WORKSHOP

Like every other part of independent schools, the advancement arm has been impacted by Covid-19 and the racial reckoning happening in response to police brutality and the killing of Black Americans. Unable to follow tried and true practices of in-person relationship-building, every fundraiser has had to be creative, flexible and reflective in this virtual and ever-changing world. In this moment in our country’s history, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to examine those practices and beliefs that keep us from being as inclusive and equitable as our values and mission call us to be.

How can the independent school advancement office raise much-needed funds during a global pandemic while developing more inclusive practices? How can we ensure that our practices in advancement are not perpetuating a culture that marginalizes the experiences of underrepresented groups in our community? This workshop will invite participants to understand that there are common and effective development practices that also support values of equity and inclusivity. Through planning and practice, we will consider how our advancement conversations and messaging can be both inclusive and compelling.

Participants will understand:

  • Why raising more money and being more equitable are not at odds with each other
  • How to design events, campaigns, and messaging that are inclusive and meet their school’s DEI values and goals
  • How to measure, assess, and analyze the effectiveness of their advancement efforts beyond reaching their financial goals
