Independent school educators collaborating at a CATDC workshop.

ABOUT THIS ONLINE WORKSHOP

When teachers are well-prepared, strategically mentored, and feel a sense of belonging, the chances that they will thrive in a new working environment are high. This virtual workshop will explore ways to redesign the onboarding process that emphasize care and belonging. Through a series of small-group discussions and activities, participants will walk away with practical tips and strategies to reinvigorate ways new faculty and staff members enter a school’s community.

  • Identify the pivotal role relationships, belonging, and purpose serve for thriving school cultures
  • Examine a relational program for supporting new faculty and staff as a vital component of school culture
  • Reflect on the connection between one's experience, identity, and purpose for education

Participants will walk away with a digital toolkit full of templates and activity examples.

AUDIENCE

This workshop is open to all educators, particularly those connected to the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding and mentoring of teachers, administrators, and staff.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

AngieAdams

Angie Adams serves as the Director of Equity and Inclusion and teaches AP Calculus AB at Vistamar School. Angie was born in Philadelphia, PA and is an experienced educator and diversity practitioner teaching at public, charter and most of her career in independent schools. She credits much of her self-love, critical thinking and deep commitment to joy, equity and justice to her alma mater Abington Friends School where she later served as the Dean of Students and Girls Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach. Angie is driven to continuously create communities and belonging by infusing joy and empathy into every encounter. At Arcadia University where she earned her B.A. in Mathematics Secondary Education, M.Ed in Special Education and started her pursuit of Ed.D in Educational Leadership, she was able to further cultivate those qualities and dive into social justice work, where she started to explore the social emotional impacts for students of color at independent schools. She gets her love, strength and courage from being an African American and Puerto Rican woman who was raised by a family who equally valued these qualities in passing forward a better community. Outside of teaching and learning she loves to coach and play basketball and write poetry. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.

Regan Galvan

Regan Galvan serves as the Director of Teaching and Learning at Vistamar School. Before joining Vistamar, Regan has advised students and taught math, history, and choral music at both public and independent schools in Southern California for grades 6 - 12 since 2001. Regan is a graduate of the University of California at San Diego and Teachers College at Columbia University. Regan has dabbled in professional work beyond her day job, including some writing, giving an occasional workshop, and co-creating a Womxn in Leadership Circle for Los Angeles independent school educators. A self-described nerd for pedagogy, Regan is curious about the intersection of student support and engaging pedagogy. Regan thinks a lot about active, student-centered learning and authentic, equitable assessment. While not nerding out about teaching and learning, Regan spends time at home, the beach, Costco, or the minivan with her three children and husband.
