ABOUT THIS IN-PERSON SUMMER INSTITUTE
Unlocking Your Facilitation Potential is a comprehensive 2-day workshop designed specifically for educators who want to hone their facilitation skills. Whether you’re an aspiring leader, department head, group leader, or administrator, you recognize the pivotal role of facilitation in driving productive group dynamics. This interactive session goes beyond theory, offering practical strategies to navigate complex discussions and decisions with confidence. You will gain invaluable insights and tools to enhance your facilitation abilities, empowering you to unlock your full potential in guiding groups toward meaningful outcomes. Join us for a transformative journey towards facilitation excellence.
WORKSHOP FOCUS
Foundation & Engagement
- Establishing Facilitator Identities: Reflect on and clarify your personal facilitator identities
- Active Listening & Engagement: Develop active listening skills and engagement techniques to foster collaboration within groups
Navigating Challenges & Inclusion
- Facilitating Tough Topics: Learn strategies for managing conflicts and facilitating challenging discussions
- Fostering Inclusion: Create inclusive environments that value diverse perspectives and promote belonging within groups
Effective Practices & Decision-Making
- Agenda Design & Delivery: Build effective and responsive agendas to guide discussions and deliver on group objectives
- Decision-Making Frameworks: Utilize decision-making frameworks to facilitate creative thinking and consensus-building among participants
COACHING COHORT OPTION (Additional Fee Required)
The cohort is designed to apply learning done in the workshop to our day-to-day work at school. We’ll gather in four monthly Zoom sessions to discuss participant-generated questions and problems of facilitation practice. Each session is responsive: facilitators will seek participant insight and feedback in advance of each session and design the agenda accordingly. This is a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of workshop concepts, receive tailored feedback on your facilitation practices, and develop actionable strategies for continued growth and success. In addition, you’ll build your network by being in conversation with leaders at a variety of schools.
Each Zoom is one hour, and participants will be provided with supplemental resources to continue learning in between sessions. Additional office hours are to be determined.
Session 1: Thursday, September 12, 3:30 - 4:30pm

Session 3: Thursday, November 14, 3:30 - 4:30pm

This Summer Institute is designed for aspiring and current leaders, department heads, group leaders, and administrators.
ABOUT THE FACILITATORS
Eric Hudson is a facilitator and strategic advisor who supports schools in making sense of what’s changing in education and in being responsive to the people they serve. He has spent his career in education, and he uses his design sense to put the learner at the heart of every experience. Most recently, Eric spent a decade at Global Online Academy (GOA), first as an instructional coach and ultimately as Chief Program Officer, working with schools around the world to rethink where, when, and how we learn. Prior to GOA, he was a teacher at the middle, high school, and college levels. The classroom is where he developed his passion for learner-centered design and facilitation. He currently serves on the board of the Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools (ATLIS). Eric has a M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. from Cornell University.
Kawai Lai is a designer and facilitator partnering with leaders to plan for the future. She brings an equity lens, deep education expertise, and a visual practice to her work. Currently, she’s a Culture Transformation Consultant with August Public, an org design consultancy focused on the future of work. She is the co-author of The New Team Habits © 2020, which provides practices for leaders to build better team habits and the creator of the Strategic Planning Playbook, a step by step guide demystifying strategy for leaders who want to run an inclusive and joyful process. She co-founded VizLit to unleash the visual mind of every learner, formerly served as Vice President of Innovation at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and helped launch and grow Education Elements. Prior to her career in education, Kawai focused on change and technology with Deloitte Consulting. She has served as a trustee on the boards of several independent schools as well as currently serves as an advisory board member of Defy Ventures. She has an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Methodist University.
HOST AND PARTNER SCHOOL
CATDC partners with member schools to host our in-person programs, providing educators the opportunity to learn with peers in diverse settings. We are thrilled to partner with Harvard-Westlake School on this Summer Institute, welcoming the larger independent school community on their campus for two days of learning and collaboration.
