ABOUT THIS IN-PERSON ONGOING PROGRAM

Female-identifying humans navigating the leadership path have a lot to share about the successes and setbacks of the journey—from the energetic optimism and ambition of youth to the measured wisdom gained through years of experience; from the demands of balancing work while starting partnerships and raising young children to the freedom of the empty nest. Our season in life shapes our approach to leadership.

We invite female-identifying humans in different seasons of their careers to come together to talk, reflect, tell stories, build skills, set goals, break bread, and share laughter. Ideally, we’ll build a cohort representing different career phases and offering sustained support into the future.

Our cohort will explore these questions as well as others generated by the group:

What are my core leadership values and how do they shape my mission and purpose?
How can I lead from anywhere in my school and empower others to lead?
How do I tap into the power of mentorship and sponsorship?
How will my core leadership values keep me centered in challenging circumstances?
How might co-coaching with a colleague help me grow?
How do I prepare for the next steps in my career?
How do I balance personal and professional fulfillment?
What can I offer to and learn from others in this cohort?

During the 2022-2023 school year, we will gather four times for full-day workshops and community building. Our days will include:

Sharing our stories
Compassionate self-reflection – where am I on my leadership journey, where do I want to be, and how do I get there?
Skill building – navigating power dynamics, negotiating, building cultural competency, and supporting strong partnerships and teams are some of the areas we will explore with special guests.
Case-studies – how to work through difficult and unpredictable circumstances – leading with integrity, heart, and vulnerability through difficult challenges.
Sponsorship and mentorship – how do we help one another?
Goal setting--what might be some next steps for my career? What are my small goals? What are my big goals?
Self-care--how can I sustain myself over the course of my career? What shifts need to happen in me? In my school?

WOMEN + LEADERSHIP

In addition to our four sessions, participants in this yearlong cohort are given complimentary registration to Women + Leadership in the Bay Area on January 20, 2023. Since 2010, CATDC has hosted Women + Leadership to inspire independent school women to grow and develop as leaders in their personal and professional lives. Women + Leadership is an affinity space that is welcoming and respectful of all women of all backgrounds, including trans women and those who are nonbinary, gender non-conforming, and any others who identify as a woman in a way that is significant to them.

COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS

CATDC and the Bay School of San Francisco will be working together to do all we can to ensure your health and safety over the course of our four sessions, monitoring closely nationwide, state, and local updates and recommendations. We ask that you do not attend if you are infected with Covid, have Covid symptoms, or have had close contact with someone who is infected in the last 10 days.

All participants in this program need to be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines and show a copy of their COVID-19 vaccination card (with booster or boosters) before attending. You are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines when you have received all doses in the primary series and all boosters recommended for you, when eligible.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Bijani Mizell is an English teacher and Instructional Coach at Marin Academy. When not teaching Gyasi or Otsuka, she serves as a leadership and transformational coach for faculty at all levels. She inaugurated Marin Academy’s peer coaching program based on principles of inclusion, collaboration, and authenticity. Recently, she led a team of faculty and administrators in creating a set of professional growth teacher competencies in alignment with Marin Academy's groundbreaking Strategic Plan. Previously, she worked at Branson as Director of Community Engagement, Freshman Dean, and English Department Chair. Among her many achievements, Bijani spearheaded a mission-aligned departmental curriculum redesign with an emphasis on diverse voices, and restructured the freshman advisory and senior mentorship programs to prioritize social emotional learning and community building. Bijani credits the mentorship she received for making education her vocation and believes that powerful female leadership can transform schools into equitable, compassionate institutions. She earned her BA in English from Princeton University and her MA in English Literature from King's College London. Before she began her teaching career, Bijani worked as a journalist in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia, as a fashion writer in London and San Francisco, and in book publishing in New York and San Francisco. When not playing tag with her children, she is likely trying out a new recipe, dancing in a West African or Zumba class (in person once again - hooray!), or watching a British murder mystery with her husband.

Karen Whitaker started her career teaching in Bay Area public schools before joining The Branson School as an English teacher. Karen wore many hats at Branson, including Freshman Dean and Director of Studies before serving as Academic Dean and Assistant Head of School for Academics for many years. As her career progressed, Karen’s greatest professional satisfaction came from mentoring teachers, expanding opportunities for teacher leaders, and sponsoring aspiring leaders. In her work with Carney Sandoe, she’s privileged to have earned the trust of school leaders and aspiring leaders as they manage leadership transitions. Karen was a frequent participant in CATDC programs and remains connected with members of the first cohort of beginning administrators sponsored by what was then called the BATDC. Karen has presented on women in leadership at NAIS annual conferences, The National Coalition of Girls’ Schools conference, and the Carney Sandoe Women’s Institute. Karen earned her BA from Stanford, her California Teaching Credential from University of California, Berkeley, and her MA through the Klingenstein Program at Columbia. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, bird watching, hiking, reading, yoga, and spending time with family and friends.
