This session offers practical insights and empathetic guidance for fostering open communication and understanding within families with transgender, nonbinary, or gender-diverse youth. Discover tools to strengthen family bonds, promote empathy, and foster a supportive environment for every family member throughout their unique journey. This program will support educators, parents, grandparents, family, friends, colleagues, social workers, therapists, and community members.

Facilitated by members of The San Francisco Equity Leaders (SFEL), a cohort of DEI Directors from Bay Area independent schools and consultants, this ongoing program is intended for people who are doing DEIB work in official and “unofficial” roles. It is meant to provide participants with a safe and supportive community to reflect, share stories, and learn from each other.

In this dynamic and interactive workshop, participants will learn concrete strategies to meet neurodiverse learners where they are and help them strengthen essential executive functioning and social-emotional skills.

This 3-hour workshop, led by the Redbud Resource Group, will support independent school educators across California in deepening their cultural and historical understanding of Native communities, land acknowledgment practices, and their personal and school relationships with Native peoples.

This 3-session, online cohort will center collective dialogue, offering White educators the opportunity to reflect on and process how they are experiencing—emotionally and somatically—this rise in global, national, and local conflict. Participants will also consider the ways that white supremacy culture prevents us from breaking our silence and stepping into conflict with curiosity and humility.

This ongoing program will provide new leaders and educators growing into leadership roles with the tools and strategies to lead more successfully. With a focus on fostering our own personal growth as well as furthering our responsibility for the growth and development of others, participants will identify and hone the skills and habits of effective leaders, including locating one’s authentic leadership style, leveraging position within an institution, fostering high functioning teams, making informed decisions, navigating change and conflict, and creating and maintaining inclusive school environments in predominantly white institutions.

This program will provide new and aspiring leaders with tools and strategies to transition successfully into a leadership role. Throughout this program, participants will also have the opportunity to discuss the dynamics, challenges, and opportunities unique to their roles and schools. Participants will engage in focused conversations around navigating colleague dynamics, becoming a supervisor, prioritizing tasks, and engaging in effective communication strategies.

This two-day Summer Institute is designed to take you on a journey through transformative professional design and facilitation experiences. Drawing upon research-informed practices, transformational adult learning theory, Universal Design for Learning, and liberatory design, The Design Lab provides a unique opportunity to revitalize your meeting ideas, opening week workshops, professional learning days, or any other gathering.

Over the course of the two days, we will explore practical applications of UDL to lesson design and how to leverage the UDL guidelines to design for access and learner agency. Participants will also have the choice to work independently or in small teams to apply their understanding of UDL and the UDL design process in order to identify and reduce barriers that limit learning. In this workshop, participants will gather the understanding and tools needed to support gender diversity in early childhood settings. Janna Barkin will provide information about gender and gender identity, classroom best practices, resources, and insightful takeaways for educators who want to create a more inclusive and just world for children and all of us.

This virtual intensive is designed for educators seeking grounded understanding and practical support to negotiate the complex racial dynamics resulting from how Black and Asian communities in the United States have been historically (and still are!) pitted against one another as a strategy for upholding racial oppression.

In this virtual intensive, participants will review policies, California and Federal laws, and statutes to ensure adherence to search and hiring procedures. Using data, research, best practices, and case studies, participants will learn equitable hiring practices for hiring committees with alignment to the CAIS Strategic Plan (2023 – 2027) Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging Principles.

In this interactive and practical series, science educators of all levels will engage with the concept of decolonizing their curricula, as well as reflect on concepts, tools, and resources that can be integrated into specific lessons and content. Shifting away from euro-centric, White supremacist structures and classroom power dynamics, participants will debunk the assumption that this work can happen more naturally in the humanities. Throughout the series, participants will have the opportunity to build or workshop lessons with fellow educators and develop a long-term plan for continuing this work within their departments, divisions, and school communities.
