Teaching Foundations (LA)
The Teaching Foundations program is designed to support the growth and success of all teachers—particularly those in their early years at independent schools—by focusing on foundational areas of classroom teaching.
Sessions are organized around the following topics: identity and culture (self, school, and classroom), lesson design and pedagogy, building successful professional relationships, communication and feedback, and sustaining a career in teaching.
Led by master teachers, administrators, and guest presenters, this respected program provides participants with personalized attention and specific instruction that is adaptable for all grade levels. Emphasis is placed on modeling and using best practices for lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment as well as on developing communication skills, cultural competencies, and confidence as an advisor and leader. Even seasoned teachers find useful tools and benefit from the opportunity to work with top educators in a supportive, inclusive atmosphere.
We are pleased to announce that in addition to our four-day summer institute we are including two day-long follow up sessions during the fall and winter to build upon the summer and offer additional support. Research overwhelmingly shows that ongoing support, especially for new teachers, leads to both greater skills and increased retention.

has worked in education (both public and independent) for two decades and currently serves as the Dean of Faculty at the Bay School of San Francisco. Prior to her current role at Bay, Lori taught Humanities, Literature, and Religion/Philosophy courses; served as an Instructional Coach; and was the founder/coordinator of Bay's Teaching Fellows program. This will be Lori’s sixth year as a co-facilitator/teacher leader in Teaching Foundations, a program that brings her joy and professional rejuvenation. In addition to facilitating professional development, teaching, and leading, Lori actively works towards equity and social justice in education, striving to offer access and pathways for all school stakeholders to thrive.
has extensive experience working with teachers, students, and parents in independent schools throughout the country. As Upper School Dean of Instruction at Polytechnic School, J.D. collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to advance innovative instructional design, equity and inclusion throughout Poly’s Upper School. Before joining Poly in 2017, J.D. served as Academic Dean at The School for Ethics and Global Leadership (SEGL) in Washington, D.C. She began her career as an educator serving a remote community in the Bahamas, and then teaching history at the Pomfret School in Connecticut. She has taught Comparative Government and Politics, International Relations, World History and U.S. History, and also designed and taught electives on African history.
wide-ranging teaching career began in 2000. He has taught Humanities at Meopham School in England, where he also served as Department Head, Head of Year, Head of Sixth Form, and Progress Manager. In 2008, Andy moved to California with his wife and family. After arriving, Andy taught Advanced Placement World History live to South Korea from the SAT300 Academy in Fullerton, California. Since 2009, Andy has been teaching 6th-grade Social Studies at Chandler School in Pasadena. There, he has been the Social Studies Department Chair, a Language Arts teacher for the Partnership for Success summer program, a soccer coach, and a debate coach.
has an extensive career of over 20 years in public and private K-12 education. Trina has taught in both the History and English departments at the middle school and high school level. She was recognized in 2009 as Teacher of the Year. With the desire to have a greater voice in school management, she pursued an administrative position. As Dean of Students and Academics at a private, college preparatory school, Trina served as an instructional leader and mentor. Her passion for diversity, equity and inclusion led her to her current senior leadership position of Director of Equity and Inclusion at Brentwood School in Los Angeles. She regularly works to facilitate programs, trainings, workshops and seminars to increase awareness and education for people of all walks of life.
