Navigating one’s way through adolescence has never been more complicated than it is today. As concerns grow about the emotional and physical well-being of adolescents, study after study shows the central importance of a relationship with a caring adult to a young person’s development. Parents and students seek out independent schools, with their small classes and involved faculty, to offer these relationships.

Now in its 54th year, the Stanley H. King Counseling Institute offers a model of teaching counseling and listening skills to teachers, advisors, administrators, and other school personnel. Our goal is not to train professional counselors, but to help teachers strengthen and deepen their relationships with students. Participants learn to help students with a range of developmental and relational challenges, as well as to recognize serious psychological difficulty and seek appropriate help. This workshop is ideal for those new to the Stanley King Counseling Institute and alumni of past institutes interested in renewing and sharpening their skills. term paper presentation Learning How to Listen

Students look to teachers all the time for guidance, and they watch us closely as examples of how to behave, feel, and cope with life’s challenges. Whether we are aware of this or not, we are guiding them by our responses, our actions, and our inactions. Students’ needs are both evident and hidden, and they seek adults who can handle feelings and experiences they sometimes can’t. Ellen Porter Honnet, Ed.D

Ellen Porter Honnet, Ed.D., Institute Director is a psychologist with expertise in cross-cultural issues, adolescent sexuality and listening skills. Working with teens and young adults, her training was at the Harvard and Wellesley College Health Services. She was for several years a residential dean and Assistant Dean for Co-education/Sexual Harassment Hearing Officer at Harvard College.

Paula Chu, Ph.D

Paula Chu, Ph.D., Associate Director of the Institute, is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Connecticut and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in NY. Before shifting to private practice, she was for many years an Academic Dean and then Director of Counseling in independent schools, teaching throughout her tenure. Paula has long had a particular interest in issues related to justice, inclusion, and equity. She lives on a boarding school campus in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Roland Davis, Ph.D., MSW

Roland Davis, Ph.D., MSW, is the Executive Director of Undergraduate Advising and Student Success at Simmons College. He was formerly the Assistant Head of School at Middlesex School and, prior to that, Associate Dean of Students and founding Director of the Office of Intercultural Education at Bates College. Roland has a primary research interest in the challenges that may interfere with the success of students of color at predominantly white institutions.

Melanie Drane, MA, MFA, LMFT

Melanie Drane, MA, MFA, LMFT, is a psychotherapist in private practice in Los Angeles. She currently consults to independent schools and nonprofits. She was formerly a counselor at the Southern California Counseling Center and the Jung Institute of LA. She also has served as the Writer-in-Residence at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan.
