Leading for School-Wide Equity: A Workshop for School Leadership

While we often think about equity in our classrooms, it’s just as important to consider how we support greater diversity and inclusion at the administrative level. How do we provide leadership that will support teachers and build institutional practices that advance equity? In this one-day workshop for heads of school, assistant heads, division directors, deans, admissions officers, and other administrators we will look at the research that shows why racially diverse classrooms create higher levels of critical thinking for all students. We will also discuss how a more diverse faculty can increase student achievement and how to improve hiring practices. Using case studies and participants’ own experiences, we will reflect on the challenges facing school leaders and how we can support this work at every level.

Specific topics will include:

  • Research and examples of school-wide diversity, equity, and inclusivity policies that impact student achievement
  • Hiring and retaining diverse faculty members
  • Collaborating with the Board and others in the senior administrative/leadership team on diversity, equity and inclusion

Elizabeth Denevi

Elizabeth Denevi is the Associate Director for Mid West Educational Collaborative, a non-profit agency that works with schools nationally to increase equity, promote diversity pedagogy, and implement strategic processes for growth and development. Previously, she served as Director of Studies & Professional Development at Latin School of Chicago. In this position, Elizabeth was responsible for the stewardship and integration of curriculum from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, as well as for the oversight and coordination of professional development and evaluation for all faculty.
