Equity as Excellence (SF)

The goal of this three-day professional development opportunity is to understand the research and pedagogical practices that support equitable, diverse, and excellent K-12 schools. We will focus on three areas for study and reflection:

  • Foundations of Diversity Pedagogy: multicultural education and the field’s development over time
  • Curricular Scope and Sequence: examples of inclusive classroom lessons and teaching strategies
  • Leadership Best Practices: support for administrators in leading a diverse community

Beginning with a thorough exploration of current research methods that support an inclusive teaching/learning environment, each day will include curriculum design along with leadership strategies that promote equity and sustain excellence. The Program Director for this workshop is Elizabeth Denevi, Associate Director, Mid West Ed, and Co-Founder of Teaching While White. Guest presenters and organizations include: Dr. Howard Stevenson, Milton Reynolds, Randolph Carter, and Gender Spectrum.

Day 1: Opening session with Milton Reynolds, Facing History & Ourselves

  • Framing Equity as Excellence: the Intersection of Research, Theory & Practice

Day 2: Joel Baum, Gender Spectrum

  • Creating Gender Sensitive & Inclusive Learning Environments

Day 3:  Dr. Howard Stevenson, Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania

  • Promoting Racial Literacy

For 2016 attendees who would like to participate:

The 2017 program will be very similar to last summer’s experience. We will be adding some new scholarship to the pre-reader, but the 3-day program will stay largely the same. This is because we received such great feedback about the design last year. That said, you know how dense the programming is. So, you are welcome to return and bring new participants from your school. Of course, the experience will be different due to the new composition of the group. We are offering a discount for returning attendees.
